My current work comprises portraits of living people, sculptures based on Tudor portraits, and imaginary character heads. Period dress is carefully researched and the historical sculptures offer a 3D glimpse into the past, normally only recorded in paintings. Whilst being involved with both past and present, my sculptures are clearly contemporary, and I view my work as bridging a boundary between ceramics and pure figurative sculpture.
I use Craft Crank stoneware clay and apply multiple glazes while the clay is raw, and fire to 1260oC in oxidation. Each is a one-off piece and can require up to four firings.
